Speaking to The AP, the Rabbit Hole actress noted that she finds raising her children more rewarding than tackling a challenging acting role.
"I'm in a place where I just don't want to take on too much," she said. "It's not about, 'Oh my gosh, I've got to get all these things for myself', because I love being at home."
Kidman further explained that it is often her mother Janelle and husband Keith Urban that encourage her to return to her work.
"But you know, my husband and my mother will say, 'You shouldn't just abandon your talent. You should still get out there and do some things every now and then, because you'll appreciate that over the next couple of decades'.
"And I suppose deep down, I know they're right, because part of me could easily just keep nesting and staying at home. It's really nice," she remarked.
The actress won an Academy Award and a BAFTA for her performance in director Stephen Daldry's 2002 drama The Hours.
Rabbit Hole is now playing in US cinemas and is released on February 4 in the UK.
