The singer made the Queen's New Year Honours List for her work as founder of the Nelson Mandela-inspired Sing campaign which aims to fight poverty and AIDS in the continent, reports Sky News.
"As somewhat of a renegade, it either means I've done something terribly right - or they've done something terribly wrong," she said of the acknowledgment.
"In any case, whatever powers that be have deemed me worthy of such a recognition, I'm getting my fake leopard pillbox hat dusted and ready."
Guitarist Richard Thompson was also amongst the OBE recipients in the music category, while actors Sheila Hancock and David Suchet become CBEs. Stage star Harriet Walter has been appointed a dame.
