The Casino Jack star was appearing on Tuesday's edition of the NBC show when Fallon revealed that Carson hosted the first ten years of The Tonight Show from the studio they were sitting in.
He then asked if Spacey would treat the audience to a Carson impression, to which the actor requested Fallon give up his seat behind the desk. "Since he used to sit there I should probably sit there," he said, making Fallon take the role of guest.
"How the tables have turned!" he joked. "I've missed you since you retired Jimmy... How the hell are you?"
The actor, who stars as lobbyist Jack Abramoff in Casino Jack, also spoke about his Golden Globe nomination for the movie, saying that he was "very honoured".
However, he then pretended to cry into his coffee cup, joking: "This is my sixth Golden Globe nomination and I would just remind the voters that I've never won!"
Casino Jack is in theatres now.
