The Country Strong actor told The New York Times that he tries to never publicly disclose details of his personal life.
"My biggest thing has always been privacy," Hedlund said.
The star continued: "With an interview such as this where the questions are about me, I struggle to express myself.
"I have an immediate answer in my head of what I'd say, but sometimes I feel that it would be too honest. So these wheels of censorship start going around my head."
Hedlund also revealed that he enjoys reading when he has spare time and is currently "getting through" French author Marcel Proust's 1913 semi-autobiographical novel In Search of Lost Time.
Country Strong opens January 7 in the US and on March 25 in the UK.
