The actress, who currently appears in USA's upcoming drama Fairly Legal, told America.gov that she tries to remain true to her artistic self and choose projects based on the emotional effect they have on her, rather than how much they might pay.
"I have no idea what is in store. I just hope that, whatever it is, I keep surprising people in a good way," she said.
"I know that I've been attracted to the roles before the money, and I hope that that attitude will take me to where the two will combine nicely."
Shahi went on to insist that she does not rely on her good looks to get by in Hollywood, instead preferring to work hard at improving herself as an actress.
"Pretty girls are a dime a dozen in this town, so if you want to last, you have to have a little bit more than that. I think I've got something. Can I tell you what it is? No, I don't know what it is," she explained.
"I work hard, I continue to work hard, and I guess whenever it's the right time, the right project and the right talent - when those three things meet and collide - I guess that's when and why I've gotten things."
Fairly Legal premieres on January 20.
