The Wall Street star confirmed on NBC's Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Friday that his throat tumour has now gone and that he wants to live each day to its fullest.
"I smell the roses," he said, when asked how the experience had changed him. "I wake up in the morning and each day is special.
"I think the thing that really hit me was a deeper bond with family and friends. [And] the support I got from fans, who I guess over the years feel like they know you and they share all this information with you."
The actor, who recently celebrated his ten-year anniversary with Catherine Zeta-Jones, also praised the couple's children Dylan, 10, and Carys, 7, for their support. "They got it," he said. "They were just great."
Douglas, who revealed that he lost around 36lbs during his treatment but that he has gained about 12lbs back so far, recently began preparation work for his new role in the Liberace biopic, with filming scheduled to start next year.
He presented the 'Best Movie' trophy at this weekend's Golden Globe Awards, joking that there "had to be an easier way to get a standing ovation" after the crowd rose to applaud him.
