The church has received media coverage in recent years for picketing the funerals of US soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The actress told The Hollywood Reporter that the Globes may have been targeted by the Westboro Baptist Church because of the nominations that were awarded to her film The Kids Are All Right, which tells the story of a lesbian couple trying to hold their family together.
"That made me very sad," Bening said.
She continued: "They may have had [The Kids Are All Right in mind]. I think that gives us all the more reason to go to the Golden Globes, and for the HFPA to see beyond that, [not] caught up behind the narrow-mindedness."
Bening took home the 'Best Actress' award at last night's ceremony for her performance in The Kids Are All Right.
