Anthony Hopkins: 'I used to drink too much'

Sir Anthony Hopkins has admitted that he consumed too much alcohol during his younger years.

Speaking to CNN, the Oscar-winning actor admitted that the frequent drinking pushed him to the edge of sanity.

"Tequila was my hooch," he said. "That nearly undid me, drove me nuts, so I stopped."

Hopkins further explained that before he gave up alcohol in 1975, he was always most concerned with where he would find his next drink.

"I drank anything I could back in the old days… Whatever I couldn't eat - whatever I couldn't chew - I [drank]."

The 73-year-old star previously told The Guardian that he used Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to kick his addiction once and for all.

Hopkins will next star in The Rite, which is released on January 28 in US cinemas and on February 25 in the UK.
