DS Icon: The California Dreams

"Don't wake me up if I'm dreaming... California DREEAAAAMS!" You'll struggle to find anyone who grew up watching Peter Engel's teen sitcom California Dreams that won't shed a tear when they hear the 'Surf Dudes With Attitude' laidback super-cool theme tune. Following on from Engel's success with Saved By The Bell, CD is often overshadowed by its older TV sibling. However, while both shows may have shared the same sensibilities, it would be cruel for the stars of this TNBC classic to be overlooked anymore.
The California Dreams were a band who throughout three seasons changed their membership with a fortunate frequency that allowed certain cast members to depart during the show's four year span on the air. The classic lineup was Matt, Jenny, Tiffani and Tony, but nods must also go to latecomers Sam, Jake and Mark, and of course, their cheeky but slightly useless manager Sly. As with all Peter Engel shows, the band taught us plenty of lessons about love, drugs, friendship and a constant flurry of other right-on messages. All of this was particularly important because the music they made, to put it bluntly, was horrendous. It was the sort of heart-warming educational TV that should make Dick and Dom hang their heads in shame in Da Bungalow.
