Redford 'will never heal from son's death'

Robert Redford has stated that he will never fully recover from the death of his infant son over 50 years ago.

The 74-year-old screen legend lost 2-and-a-half-month-old Scott, his first child with ex-wife Lola Van Wagenen, to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) back in 1959, a tragic moment that he likens to a "scar" that "never heals".

He told AARP: "It was really hard. We were very young. I had my first theatre job, which didn't pay much.

"We didn't know anything about SIDS, so the only thing you think is that you've done something wrong. As a parent, you tend to blame yourself. That creates a scar that probably never completely heals."

Redford went on to have three more children with Van Wagenen before their 27-year marriage came to an end in 1985. He married his partner of 13 years Sibylle Szaggers in 2009.
