The Golden Globe-winning actor's star was placed next to his son Kiefer's, according to The AP.
"This marker I can actually come and visit," said Donald, who also joked that gaining a star is better than receiving a cemetery headstone.
The 75-year-old added: "I could get a chair and sit here, or a bucket and a mop and clean it, and make sure that people don't step on it."
Actor Colin Farrell, Donald's co-star in the upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses, read a statement from Kiefer, who was unable to attend the unveiling ceremony.
Kiefer's letter read: "I selfishly wanted to be there to simply tell you how proud I am to have you as my father and how even more proud I am to be your son."
Donald, who can currently be seen starring in The Mechanic, has appeared in several films since the 1960s, including MASH, Ordinary People and Pride & Prejudice, as well as the TV shows Dirty Sexy Money and Commander in Chief.
