Goldberg: 'I was a functioning drug addict'

Whoopi Goldberg has admitted that she was a "functioning drug addict" during her younger years.

During a discussion about Charlie Sheen's recent struggles on The View, Goldberg revealed that she once battled a serious substance abuse problem.

"I was a functioning drug addict," she said. "I showed up for work because I knew a lot of people would be out of work and I wouldn't get a cheque that I needed to buy my drugs."

Goldberg went to say that her addiction eventually became so severe that she was afraid to leave her bedroom.

"I was so scared. I hit bottom," she added. "I did that a long time ago."

The comedian further asserted that she is now "as straight as an arrow", having kicked her drug habit some years ago.
