Boy George escapes with £575 fine

Boy George was fined £575 for wasting police time, with drugs charges dropped in a plea bargain.

The singer pleaded guilty to the lesser offence yesterday on trial in New York.

On October 7 last year he called 911 claiming there was an intruder in his Manhattan flat while he was having a party. When officers arrived, they allegedly found 13 small bags of cocaine.

The Culture Club frontman's manager said he did not know why he made the claim up.

He was conditionally discharged, but must go on a drug rehabilitation programme and do five days community service.

George said he was pleased the trial was over. "I am relieved and happy that this case has been disposed of," he commented. "I love New York and I'm looking forward to coming back and working in the States later this year."

Judge Anthony Ferrara warned the star he still had a criminal record "which never goes away".
