Elton John slammed the British sense of humour as 'cruel' during an appearance on The Today Show this week.

The 'Crocodile Rock' singer was questioned about British people's love of sarcasm by the show's host Matt Lauer as well as his recent comments on troubled rock star Billy Joel.

"The British have a very ironic sense of humour and it's kind of a cruel sense of humour in a way," he told Lauer, according to MSN. "It's about not holding yourself in too high a regard."

John also followed up on comments he made recently about friend and fellow singer Billy Joel, after claiming that Joel's numerous stints in rehab had been 'light' and that he needed to undergo some 'tough' treatment.

"I love him," John clarified. "He may want to punch my face in at the moment but it's okay."
