The actor - who served 59 days of a 90-day prison sentence in 1998 after being convicted of assault on his former girlfriend and a police officer while drunk - told People that he learned from the experience, which allowed him to prioritise his life.
"Honestly, [it was] not so bad. Jail was a result of me not taking time for myself," he explained.
"So I was forced to take some time for myself. It was necessary for me. When you're going down that path, you either kill yourself or you're forced to take time out."
Slater also revealed that he often contacts other celebrities who are going through addiction problems in order to show his support.
