In an interview with GQ, the country star recalled meeting Cobain in 1992 and bonding with the Nirvana frontman over their two young daughters.
"That's what we talked about, that we each had a little girl," he told the publication.
Cyrus went on to say that Cobain's suicide in 1994 made him re-evaluate his life and decide to spend more time with his family.
"There comes a point where you just got to step back. That's how I ended up out here [living in Tennessee]," he explained.
"I stepped back. I was supposed to go and do another world tour. I said no. I cancelled my tour. Kurt Cobain had just died, and that really had an impact on me."
Cyrus added: "He was one of those guys that became a friend to me that I never expected."
