Writing in her new autobiography, which is being serialised by The Mirror, the former Coronation Street actress admitted that some of her life experiences could rival storylines in the soap
"My life story rivals any soap for drama and heartache - but work and laughter have always got me through," she said. "I turned 60 last year and I'm amazed I've survived so much pain. But it’s time to let go of the hurt, so it doesn't rot away inside me.
"I'm fighting for my life now. Loose Women's been like therapy, allowing me to talk about my experiences. I hope my story helps other women in violent relationships, loveless marriages or facing similar battles to realise they can get their lives back."
Hewson confessed that at one of her lowest points she had considered suicide as her only option.
"I got to the point where everything seemed pointless and I considered throwing myself into traffic on a motorway," she said. "I found myself walking towards it but it was the thought of my daughter that made me realise what a stupid cow I was! It was a turning point. Life didn't suddenly become easy after that. I had to battle back to health, cope with financial meltdown and face up to being alone.
"But then I got the job on Loose Women and everything started falling into place," she added. "Now I've got two grandchildren and a great life on my terms. But what a ride it's been!"
Hewson's autobiography Sherrie: Behind the Laughter will be published on March 3.
