Australian star Teresa Palmer has admitted that achieving success in the US has proven to be "overwhelming".

The I Am Number Four actress told Access Hollywood that she considers herself very lucky to have landed a role in director DJ Caruso's sci-fi thriller.

"It's been a crazy whirlwind," she said. "It all feels very surreal and overwhelming and exciting all at the same time and I'm really trying to immerse myself in this experience, because who knows when I'll have this opportunity again."

Palmer, who also stars with Topher Grace in the upcoming Take Me Home Tonight, went on to say that despite her hectic schedule, she frequently makes time to visit her mother Paula in her native Australia.

She added: "I have a three-month rule with my mum… We have to see each other every three months. She's actually here at the moment, going on press tours with me for both these movies, so I get to have her for four months and that helps to ease the homesickness."

I Am Number Four is now playing in US cinemas and will open on February 23 in the UK.

Take Me Home Tonight is released on March 4 in the US and on May 13 in the UK.
