The Charlie's Angels star joined a United Nations trip to schools near Nairobi after she heard about a new free education programme.
"I wanted to go because I read an article in the New York Times about education becoming free in certain parts of Africa," revealed the actress. "About how the classrooms were sort of bursting at the seams because so many kids wanted to go.
"I thought that was so extraordinary that I wanted to see and experience what that was like and to sort of go down there and touch and feel and taste that world."
"Angelina has my hugest respect," she continued. " I actually called her and asked her (for advice) when I was going on this trip and she was very kind. I just think that the work that she does is absolutely inspiring."
Photographs that Barrymore took while away are to be auctioned to raise money for Marie Claire magazine's World Hunger Campaign.
