The Academy Award-winning director was talking to Daybreak's Kate Garraway on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair party.
"I didn't really sleep last night and I was certainly very nervous," he said. "It's not just about whether you win, but making a speech in front of half a billion viewers."
When Garraway asked Hooper how working on EastEnders had influenced him, he revealed: "Even before that, I directed Byker Grove!
"I'm very grateful to British television for the breaks it gave me, and it's a very nice journey from there to here."
Hooper also told Garraway that it took him a while to grasp the significance of the ceremony.
"I was sitting a couple of seats away from Steven Spielberg and I spoke to him in a couple of the breaks," he added.
"He was one of my childhood heroes, so there was something about his presence that made me realise how big it was. It's huge, it's huge."
