Melissa Gilbert 'splits from husband'

Melissa Gilbert and husband Bruce Boxleitner have announced their separation.

The actress, who married Boxleitner in 1995, revealed on Tuesday that the pair would end their 16-year marriage but insisted that they plan to remain amicable, reports People.

"We have loved each other for a very long time and we share four incredible sons together," Gilbert said in a statement.

"On behalf of our family we ask to be allowed our privacy during this very difficult time."

The couple are parents to 15-year-old son Michael as well as three children from previous marriages.
