Helen Latham has received the traumatic news that her unborn baby will require surgery for a serious defect.
Doctors will have to operate to save the Footballers' Wives star's son's life as soon as he is born. They have discovered his intestinal organs are developing outside his body. The baby – due for June – will then face weeks in intensive care.
"He's got to have an op at Great Ormond Street Hospital, but the odds are good, 95 per cent," Latham explained. "It was a shock at first but we are feeling really positive now."
A friend told The People of Latham and husband Darren Morfitt's grief when they heard their child had the condition, called gastroschisis.
"She has really looked after herself during her pregnancy so she was doubly shocked when she found out her baby had a defect," he said. "It is every parent's worst nightmare. It's been really tough for them both, but they are bearing up well."
