Speaking to WWD, Lagerfeld fumed that the issue was no longer about whether Galliano is guilty of using racist language, but was now about how the fashion world is seen to be made up of people who behave in this manner.
"It's a horrible image for fashion, because they think that every designer and everything in fashion is like this," Lagerfeld explained. "This is what makes me crazy in that story."
He continued: "Today, with the internet, one has to be more careful than ever, especially if you are a publicly known person. You cannot go in the street and be drunk - there are things you cannot do."
Prosecutors in Paris have confirmed that Galliano will face trial over the incident.
