Chris Murphy represented the 34-year-old Australian actor in court yesterday after he was accused of bombarding ex-girlfriend Rachael Taylor with phone calls despite her having a restraining order against him.
Newton, who allegedly hit Taylor during a holiday in Rome last year, has been in and out of a rehab clinic since the incident.
Murphy told News.com.au: "He doesn't have any addictions, he has a psychiatric illness," also revealing that Newton had lived in "utter fear" after being attacked by a stranger last month.
He said: "The decision to ring his girlfriend was a mistake."
The case is scheduled to return to the Downing Centre Local Court in April.
