The singer was jailed for eight weeks last August after crashing his car into a branch of Snappy Snappy in Hampstead on July 4, but ultimately served under a month behind bars.
"This was a hugely shameful thing to have done repeatedly," Michael told Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Chris Evans, referring to a previous arrest in 2007. "So karmically I felt like I had a bill to pay.
"I went to prison, I paid my bill," the singer said, in an interview set to air this coming week. "Remarkably enough, I know people must think it was a really horrific experience, [but] it's so much easier to take any form of punishment if you believe you actually deserve it, and I did."
Michael recently announced that he is to release a cover of New Order's 'True Faith' in support of Comic Relief.
