The Pirates Of The Caribbean star told Bang Showbiz that he was "very strange" and was often seen as a loner.
"When I was growing up I felt a complete freak. Very strange," Depp admitted. "I felt weird at five. At the age of 12, it was me against the world.
"I remember locking myself in the bedroom and playing my guitar. It seemed like I was in there for two or three years."
The actor now has two children with long-term partner Vanessa Paradis, and insisted that she is the reason that he has changed.
"The most important thing is that Vanessa has made me not have to pretend any more about who I am," Depp added. "I feel comfortable with myself."
Depp's latest film Rango topped the US box office last weekend.
