Prince William has arrived in New Zealand to visit people involved in last month's earthquake.

The member of the British royal family, who flew into Christchurch this morning, is scheduled to meet the rescue teams working to clear the rubble from the most unstable areas of the city centre.

According to The ABC, Prince William will also travel to Greymouth to meet the families of the victims of the Pike River mine collapse which killed 29 workers last November.

He will later return to Christchurch for a memorial service that the city's Anglican bishop Victoria Matthews described as an "emotional farewell" for the "broken people" of the region.

The prince reportedly said that he wants to "get close" to the nation's people on the royal visit.
