The actor, who previously appeared in the title role of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat after winning the BBC's Any Dream Will Do, will take over the role of Emmett Forrest from Alex Gaumond.
Gaumond, who has played the character since the show opened in London's West End, has extended his run until Mead joins the cast.
Mead, whose wife Denise Van Outen is currently playing the role of Paulette until the end of April, told fans on Twitter: "I'm very excited to be going into the show. It's a great part."
Legally Blonde: The Musical was named 'Best New Musical' at the 2011 Laurence Olivier Awards over the weekend.
