Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have slammed comments by Des Lynam that they "hate each other."

Countdown presenter Lynam told a studio audience that the couple did not even speak, asking for corroboration from a co-presenter. He related: "Carol and I are on the front cover of the Radio Times. We're on there with Richard and Judy. Lovely couple, wonderful programme. But they hate each other. In the whole hour that we were with them, they never said a word."

However, the couple have refuted the allegations, with Madeley noting: "He's obviously joking. Period. If anyone was to tell you that was true, they would be talking total b******s. He's just winding the audience up. He's been a guest on our show a few times and we see him at dos and we like him and he likes us."

Lynam later said: "I was just fooling around. I also said that Carol Vorderman was going to wear Paul O'Grady's dress. It was just a bit of fun and the audience were intelligent and bright enough to understand. I was mocking everyone on the front page. I said that Noel Edmonds was 5ft 1in or something. It's just a joke."

Richard and Judy have been married since 1986. They have two children together, Jack and Chloe, while Judy also has twin 29-year-old sons Tom and Dan from her first marriage.
