Surprise government posting for Gay Byrne

In a surprise announcement, the Irish government appointed veteran TV presenter Gay Byrne chairman of the Road Safety Authority on Monday.
"I can assure you that if I find that I am up against a stone wall, civil service bureaucracy or a lack of cooperation from the Government, or they told me all lies, you will find me walking away as quickly as Eddie Shaw," Byrne said at a news conference shortly after his appointment was announced. Shaw resigned as chairman of the National Safety Council back in November, citing government-centred implementation delays; Byrne's RSA will, pending the passage of legislation in the Dáil, have control over the NSC.
Byrne hosted the Late Late Show from 1962 until 1999, and in 2005 presented Class Reunion on RTÉ One.
