According to BBC News, Jean was struck by a bullet in his right hand and was taken for medical treatment at a local hospital.
A representative for the former Fugees rapper has confirmed that Jean was later released and is said to be "doing well" now.
Although Jean himself has yet to comment on the shooting, his management team have since posted a message on his official Twitter feed saying, "We have spoken to Wyclef, he is OK. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers".
Jean had been staying near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince during the country's election campaigns to support fellow musician and presidential candidate Michel Martelly.
Jean himself filed for candidacy to stand in the elections last year before they were postponed, but was eventually ruled ineligible to stand as he had not been a resident in the country for more than five years.
Since bowing out of the current electoral race, Jean has promised to run for Presidency in Haiti at the next election in 2015.
