In an interview Vilanch did with New York magazine, he claimed that Franco "didn't get there" when he oversaw last month's Oscar ceremony.
The writer suggested that Franco's commitments to Yale University hampered the actor's preparations for hosting the event.
In response to the comments, Franco tweeted: "Bruce he let me down." The tweet was accompanied by a photograph of himself and Vilanch with the following words written over it: "James f**ked up the Oscars. Trust me, I know comedy. I mean, come on, I write for Bette Midler!"
Franco removed the tweet and the photo from his account.
Now, after Vilanch sent Franco a letter assuring the star that he was trying to "defend" him and not "diss" him during the interview, the actor issued an apology on Twitter.
The 127 Hours actor tweeted a photo of Vilanch's letter with the words, "Thanks Bruce. Sorry for reading stupid blogs. James," written over it.
