The star told Italian magazine Style that his decision to pursue acting as a profession was not motivated by a desire to become a celebrity.
"I came to a point where I said: I'm going to be a professional actor, looking for the origins of my characters, making something real out of this ephemeral job," Pattinson said. "This will allow me to live the life I want to live, to be active in green politics, to be a citizen of the world."
He continued: "Fame is [a] handicap, not a privilege, it often complicates things. I try to not fall in the web of top class hotels, first-class flights, designers sending you tons of stuff, thousands of girls everywhere."
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse star went on to say that he hopes to emulate the career of actor Jack Nicholson, who has won three Academy Awards and three BAFTAs since making his film debut in 1958's The Cry Baby Killer.
"[Nicholson] had a huge career and he always owned his characters," he said.
Pattinson also recently explained that he is reluctant to discuss details of his personal life.
The 24-year-old star will next appear with Reese Witherspoon in Water For Elephants, which is released on April 22 in the US and on May 4 in the UK.
