The 'Rocket Man' star referenced his role as a parent to Zachary - his son with partner David Furnish - during his opening monologue on the NBC sketch show.
"It's been a very exciting time for me," he told the audience. "Just a few months ago my partner David and I became the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy. As you can see, I still haven't lost the baby weight!"
He went on to joke: "For those of you concerned that we are unusual parents, don't worry, it's not like we are the only two people involved in the child's life. His godmother is Lady GaGa… That is true, it's not a joke."
GaGa had previously declined to confirm rumours that she had been chosen as godmother, but did admit back in February that she had met the baby. "He is the most beautiful, beautiful boy and he is so loved by Elton and David," she told BBC Radio 1. "They love him so much. It's a really beautiful family."
John's appearance marked the second time that he has hosted SNL, a fact which he referenced by shouting: "This is my second time here so it's entirely appropriate for me to say, 'the bitch is back!'"
He was joined by a handful of celebrities, including Carmelo Anthony and Tom Hanks, who appeared in various sketches across the evening, and Jake Gyllenhaal, who joined Weekend Update alongside Andy Samberg's Nicolas Cage to discuss his new movie Source Code.
Another sketch saw John visiting the Queen to discuss what role he should play in the upcoming nuptials between Prince William and Kate Middleton, only to be given a frosty reception by the royal family.
