This week, the Toothy Fairy actress disclosed that she was abused during her childhood by an unnamed family member. It was later reported that the Judd family is angered by Ashley's decision to publicly discuss the issue.
According to E! Online, Ashley opened up about her family's reaction at a New York City event hosted by More magazine on Wednesday night.
"It's been a little bewildering for me," she said. "My poor mother, who's incredibly witty and so quick with a quip, she's probably regretting she said, 'We put the fun in dysfunctional'."
After suggesting that she's frustrated by the media's response to her allegations, Ashley expressed hope that her story will bring attention to abuse suffered by others.
"Maybe what it takes is for [other] people to tweet about the fact that [they are] a survivor of childhood sexual abuse," the star asserted. "I'd say about 80% (sic) of the people in the US, according to statistics, have [been abused]. I remind myself that my story is a surrogate story so that people will buy [my new autobiography]."
