Following the split, Arquette checked himself into a rehab centre to deal with dependency issues and was later involved in a head-on car crash after being released from treatment.
Speaking to Access Hollywood, the actor revealed that he has been more than 100 days sober after troubling personal problems forced him to make significant lifestyle changes.
"I went through a hard time, but anyone who goes through something like [this] will know that it's difficult," Arquette said."There are points in people's lives where they have to take a look at their behaviour, what they're doing… [and] what they want to do for the rest of their lives."
He continued: "For me, it was a choice of sobriety. I'm doing... everything I can to stay sober and, sort of, be true to myself."
Arquette went on to say that he's receiving a tremendous amount of support from family and other loved ones as he tries to move forward.
"My family and friends have been amazing... I really just can't say enough about how much I love them," the star added.
The actor is currently starring with Cox and Neve Campbell in Scream 4, which is released on April 15 in US and UK cinemas.
