Gervais has been forced to repeatedly defend jokes he made during the ceremony, insisting that they were not meant to be offensive.
Appearing on The Daily Show, Stewart said that the Office co-creator should be sorry not for his caustic material, but instead for making people laugh too hard.
"Here's what you have to apologise about for the Golden Globes: making people like me, who've also hosted these events, feel inadequate by being that funny," Stewart said. "It hurt my self-esteem and I think you do owe me an apology."
Gervais also reiterated his lack of remorse, replying: "This is what I think I should apologise for about the Golden Globes: f**k all.
"If they ever came to my stand-up, their heads would explode. That was toned down. That was daytime TV. What did I say that was so bad?"
