Ringwald is best known for starring in several of John Hughes's most popular '80s teen dramas, including Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink, and admitted that people find it difficult to recognise her now at the age of 43.
"How is this possible, you know?" Ringwald told CBS News. "Everyone else can turn 40.
"I'm Molly Ringwald. I'm so associated with being young and with being a teenager," she explained, before agreeing that people probably didn't want to see her grow old.
Ringwald has three children and recently said that she wouldn't let them take up acting until they were much older.
The actress said she believes that iconic film director John Hughes saw her as a "kindred spirit", and reasoned that it was this that led him to cast her in so many of his films.
Ringwald is currently starring as Anne Juergens on the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
