Winnie the Pooh has been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The bear, who has been extant for 80 years, was given the honour alongside other animated stars, including Snow White and Donald Duck.

Hollywood's honorary mayor Johnny Grant explained: "[Animated characters] are an important part of the industry now. Some of the movies [the studios] are putting out don't do so well, but animated characters are doing great business."

Pooh's adventures have been translated into more than forty languages, and generated £3.4bn in retail sales for Disney in 2005.
