Priestley, who used to star in Beverly Hills 90210, said that the Twilight actor should be aware that his moment in the spotlight will "pass" because fame comes and goes like a "storm".
He told Popeater: "[Fame is] cyclical. There's always a next one coming. I don't know if there's any advice, you just have to weather it, weather the storm and know that this too shall pass.
"When you're really in the thick of [fame], it gets in the way of living your day-to-day life. Doing the most mundane things becomes increasingly difficult. It's like, 'Come on guys, I'm just trying to pick up my dry cleaning, really?'
"And at some point you don't want that, you enjoy the normal, mundane things of life. You don't want to turn out like Howard Hughes."
Pattinson has previously spoken out about the negative aspects of fame, admitting that he received a lot of hate mail when he first became famous. He has also said that he fantasises about beating "the s**t" out of paparazzi photographers.
