Elton John and partner David Furnish have insisted that their new son Zachary will not grow up to be spoiled.

The couple welcomed the child on Christmas Day via a surrogate mother whose identity remains private.

Speaking to People, the 'Rocket Man' singer expressed concern for children of celebrities and claimed that he and Furnish will raise Zachary to know the value of hard work, rather than simply relying on the financial comforts provided by his parents' success.

"The worst thing you can do to a child, and I've seen it happen so many times, is the silver spoon," he explained. "Being the child of a famous person is very difficult, and we're very well aware of the pitfalls of that."

Furnish added: "Our life might be very luxurious but it's all come from hard work. Both Elton and I have sort of earned everything we've done in our careers and furthered our educations through our own drive and our own ambitions, and we want Zachary to be exactly the same sort of way."

John recently confirmed that Zachary will undergo a DNA test to determine whether he or Furnish is the child's biological father.
