In an interview with the Great American Country radio station, the musician stated that if she were a man, her extramarital affair with Eddie Cibrian would not have received such scrutiny.
"[Country music] has such a double standard," Rimes said. "You know, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash and all these guys. God knows what they did back in the day. And if a woman did it, you never were accepted or forgiven. But if it was a guy, it was just their life."
She continued: "It's quite interesting to have to navigate those waters as a woman in this business."
The country singer recently married Cibrian in a small ceremony in California.
The couple began their relationship while shooting a television movie in 2009. Rimes and Cibrian announced their engagement in December of last year.
The 28-year-old recently revealed that she has learned from her affair, stating that she admits that she made a mistake in starting her relationship with Cibrian while they were both married.
