The country star, whose divorce from Lange was finalised in June 2010, revealed that she struggled to cope with the knowledge that Lange had cheated on her with her assistant Marie-Anne Thiebaud.
"I didn't want to live," she said during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
She also recalled a particularly low point during which she wrote a letter to Thiebaud, begging her former friend to move on from the situation, explaining: "I know it was pathetic. But we all have pathetic moments. No-one is above this type of low."
Ultimately, Twain insisted that she was grateful to have learned the truth about her relationship with Lange, adding: "I needed the wake-up call".
Twain announced her engagement to Frederic Thiebaud in December 2010, later describing him as "a true gift".
