Kim Cattrall: 'I feel marginalised'

Kim Cattrall has claimed that her age prevents Hollywood execs from offering her the most challenging acting roles.

The Scotsman quotes the 54-year-old actress as saying that she identifies with the aging porn star she plays in the film Meet Monica Velour.

"I feel marginalised because I'm in my 50s," Cattrall said. "I mean, if you went online and you look at some of the blogs, which one can do on a lonely night, it's pretty startling what people will say about you just because you're in your 50s."

She added: "I'm on the early side of 50 and I've had a whole life of Jane Fonda tapes and dieting and exercise and all the rest of it. So I just sort of think, 'How is it going to get any better if this is where it is now?'"

Cattrall further explained that she sometimes feels as if she is treated with scorn by many of her critics simply because she continues to explore sexuality on-screen.

"[Age] 30 was one thing; 35; 40. I felt, in Sex and the City and shows like that, we've been able to push the barrier back," she added. "But 50, it comes with disgust and anger and marginalisation. Which is really pathetically sad. It's rampant in North America. It's in Europe, yes, a little bit. But nowhere near. I think that's why I've been working a lot [in Europe] because they celebrate [age]."

The actress recently claimed that the weight she had to gain and subsequently lose for Meet Monica Velour was a mix of "heaven" and "hell".

Meet Monica Velour is currently playing in limited release in the US. A UK opening has not yet been announced.
