BBC newsreader Kate Silverton has announced that she is pregnant with her first child.

The 40-year-old broadcaster told her Twitter followers the news in a series of posts this morning, initially revealing that her recent plans to get a puppy would not be going head.

Silverton explained: "We had some very unexpected - but lovely news just recently..... I am pregnant ;-) (sic)"

She continued: "Ooh that felt odd to announce! We gave up hope of having a biological family last year so this feels something of a minor miracle...

"Sad about puppy but husband vetoed - probably sensibly - said too much to handle... He could be right although I thought I cld do both!"

Silverton revealed that she is now four months pregnant and had "a shaky first three months".

In response to well wishers, she added: "Huge thank you to all of you who are obviously up & about on this sunny Sunday. Thanks for making me smile - felt nervous about saying!"

The journalist became engaged to Michael Heron in 2009 and married in a ceremony last December.

She previously revealed that she needed a "tough" man in her life to keep up with her.
