The former Wham! singer was arrested in February for possession of drugs, and soon after the Daily Mirror printed the headline 'Drugs Could Kill George Michael'.
But the 42-year-old has said the recent media focus on him was a result of comments to journalists 18 months ago, when John accused the star of being "in a strange place", and "wasting his talent".
Michael told chat show host Michael Parkinson: "Elton said he thought I was really miserable for some reason. From that point on I've been trying to prove that I'm not. Unfortunately it made me incredibly vulnerable to the press."
Proving that this was not the case, he explained: "I haven't felt this good since I was a lot younger".
