The Australian actor, who is best known for his roles in award-winning movies such as The King's Speech, Quills and Pirates of the Caribbean, said that he wants to relax in his home country before he starts rehearsals for a theatre production of The Importance of Being Earnest in November.
Rush told The Australian that the past two years of his acting career have been a "pretty heady time".
He said: "I've been lucky just in terms of personal rewards (and) to be able to go back and do quite a bit of theatre... in and around The King's Speech and Pirates has been for me very self-defining as to the kind of actor I'd like to be."
He also revealed that it was "nice" to return to Pirates of the Caribbean character Hector Barbossa because he is such a "different character" to other roles he's played recently.
Earlier this year, Rush was awarded the 'Best Supporting Actor' BAFTA award for his interpretation of speech therapist Lionel Logue in The King's Speech.
