The 35-year-old rap artist, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, confesses in an upcoming documentary that his grandmother became his legal guardian after his mother passed away.
In the footage, 50 Cent can be seen telling a theatre full of students in South Carolina about the origins of his family, saying: "It feels good for me to learn more about my actual history.
"A lot of people don't know but I'm adopted. Yeah, my grandmother adopted me after my mother passed away. So she's like my legal guardian. My grandparents were from out here [in Edgefield, SC] so the last time I was out here I was like 6 years old."
The documentary, titled 50 Cent: The Origin of Me, premieres in the US on Monday, May 23 on VH1.
It was announced earlier today that the rapper has joined the cast of Dean Koontz's horror thriller Odd Thomas.
