This week, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he engaged in an extramarital affair with a long-time member of his family's household staff, who later became pregnant with his child.
Shriver responded to the former California Governor's admission by calling for the media to respect her family's privacy during the "painful and heartbreaking time", in what she claimed would be her only comment.
A source close to Shriver has now told People that she has hired family law attorney Laura Wasser, but also cautioned that the move does not guarantee that the journalist plans to seek a divorce from Schwarzenegger.
"Maria hasn't decided yet if she wants to end her marriage," the insider claimed.
It is thought that Shriver's decision to hire Wasser - who has previously represented Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera - pre-dated Schwarzenegger's public admission that he had been unfaithful during their marriage.
According to reports, Shriver has turned to prayer to help ease the pain caused by her husband's infidelity.
