Alex Perry has revealed that he has cut down on smoking to mark World No Tobacco Day.

The Australian fashion designer, who is also a judge on Australia's Next Top Model, said that it has been hard to drop from 20 cigarettes a day to five because smoking is "synonymous" with a career in the fashion industry.

Perry told AAP: "I think the fashion industry is known for smoking, if that makes sense. It's a glass of champagne and a cigarette, and it's all fabulous darling, but it actually isn't, and that's why I want to lead a healthier life.

"Every time I think I'm stressed, I think, 'I must have a cigarette'. I don't know why it happens at the same time, but I think a lot of people are in the same situation. Once you are addicted to smoking, then that's what you do."

Perry said that he hopes to completely quit the habit by World No Tobacco Day on May 31 and has even become the ambassador for the campaign's website.

He also spoke out about the government's plan to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes, saying: "Thankfully the plain packaging question is irrelevant to me as I'm no longer a smoker. I do believe that if people want to smoke, the packaging that the cigarettes come in won't make any difference to them."

Last year, Perry's compatriot Russell Crowe revealed that he had given up smoking for the sake of his two sons.
